PR flacks and state government cuts

2/23/13: Jeff Mapes has the story in the Oregonian. Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian cut 3 investigators from his office – while keeping his communications director, Bob Estabrook. And like a true flack, Estabrook put out lots of press releases – but it took an investigative reporter from the Oregonian to inform the public about the layoffs and the 200 cases that then got dropped.

State government, and UO, spend millions on “strategic communications”. The Around the O blog alone costs $107K a year. But make a public records request, and Dave Hubin will nickel and dime you for the fees, claiming that *you* are the one wasting the students’ money.

In other news, I’m taking down the “who should go next” administrator list. I got an earful about it from people I respect.

Thanks for taking down the “who should go next” list! Let’s try to improve the tone of discussions.

Taking that list down was the right thing to do.

    What list should go next?

Hey, where did that list go? How the hell do we get anything done if we don’t have a list? There is so much crap administration to track, we need to focus.
