$10M Tykeson gift to go towards new CAS administration offices

Buried within the “Around the 0” report, here:

Currently, the college’s department offices and operations are dispersed across more than 50 buildings on and off campus.

The new building will house central advising and administration functions for the dean’s office and college programs. Examples are College Scholars, General Social Sciences and Environmental Studies, which together serve more than 1,300 students each year.

If anyone knows more about this decision or what process led to it, please post a comment.

Am I reading this right? All the department offices are to be in a central location.? That works for LCB because all the departments are in Lillis. But CAS is different, with the departments spread all over campus. I wonder who came up with this plan.
On the bright side, maybe the plan is to clear office space for our 150 new faculty hires.

$700 per square foot with no property purchase?! For office space & not wet labs?

It’s not just for admin. According to the article, it will also house classrooms, the career center and the College Scholars program.

The ten million dollars is mainly being spent to give the deans of CAS nicer offices. I wonder how many of us knew this was a fundraising priority. The claim that “offices are spread out over the campus” is bullshit. That’s what a campus is–spread out. I don’t see any positive value in putting the offices of programs like Environmental Studies in one place, but that the sort of thing that sounds like a great idea to donors that know nothing about universities. (Until its enrollments tanked, the law school, which currently is in one place, was thinking of moving some its programs to other buildings.)

Can’t expect them to slum it in PLC with the rest of us scrubs.

I tried to get PLC condemned when I was head of the FAC some years ago. We commissioned a study to see if it was earth-quake proof; I figured they would have to tear it own if it was not. The report we got said that PLC was indeed unsound, that about half its inhabitants could die in a serious quake. But it turned out that there were four or five buildings on campus that were even worse! (At the time, Lawrence Hall was the real death-trap.) The adm said: “We don’t have the money to fix all those buildings!”–partly because they were so committed to the “Bend Campus” (does that still exist?) and the “White Stag Building”. So that was the end of that.
