Measure 97 goes down in flames

The Oregonian has the report here. Tough news for the UO, our students, and the Duck athletic program we all subsidize. The good news is that Phil Knight has offered to cough up enough money to buy out Coach Helfrich, who will have taken $20M off us and our Board of Trustees before this is over.  The bad news is that Harbaugh is not going to take the job.

How often do voters voluntarily implement a tax increase?

It’s the Nash Equilibrium! Not that that answers your question.

Since you mentioned the election… I’m ready for a few cuts at a punching bag, but since J Comey, H Abedin and D. Wasserman-Schultz are probably not listening, I’ll take swings at what’s in reach.

Thank you Mr. Schill, for focusing on the horrible inherently racist facepaint, while a real actual dangerous racist was destroying democracy. Thank you, University of Oregon, for spending months determining whether or not to rename building because there might be subtle micro hints of racism, allowing anyone who spews racist shit to sound liberated and truthful. Thank you for solving the real problems out there. Your message is really resonating.

It’s been a long week, and a long night, but this comment may still be just a bit over the top.

I think this is a very good comment. It is maddening that the “social justice” section of campus here focuses on silly things like facepaint and building names, when tackling issues like poverty, academic rigor and preparedness, ever-rising tuition, etc., are much more important for building a better society. And it’s not just a local issue… I can’t help think that being called a “racist” for opposing the renaming of buildings just cheapens the word for everyone for situations that actually matter.

Hey, but Measure 95 passed, so the U of O can now be an investment company! We’ll be able to cut out that pesky teaching half of higher “education” soon enough!

Uncle could have told you that M97 was doomed, and that Trump had an even shot or better.

Now PERS will be in a lot of gunsights.

So will the state subsidy to UO.

If the state cuts or eliminates our subsidy, what’s the point of even calling us a public university? Can we just become private and charge everyone out of state tuition rates? What’s the point of being a public university if we don’t even get any money from the state?

I think you answered your own questions very well, don’t you?

Like it or not, the state has as much control as they choose to exercise, even if they cut the subsidy to zero.
