Pres Schill gets new contract, raise, bonuses. Gives bonus for scholarships

Dylan Darling has the story in the RG here. There was no substantive faculty input into the board’s review or decision, but it sets a good lower bound for the next round of faculty union bargaining.

Shills goals are big. A 4 billion endowment would be game changing placing UO into the set of elite public flagships it calls comparators which right now are just aspiritational. Let’s hope he pulls it off. If he does, he’s worth way more than his 700k.

One key question. How do you become a leading public University without paying like one? As we’ve learned with presidents, you get what you pay for. The same applies fof faculty. And while we might reserve the highest salaries for new incoming high profile recruits, I don’t think they want to come to a place with crappy morale or uncertainty over who our dean will be and how the college’s will be structured.

How did elite public unis get that way if in the past they weren’t engaged in administrative arms races?

Does anyone besides me see a parallel between Schill’s presidential approach and Trump’s? They both focus on supporting a small privileged group, an authoritative “you’re with me or against me” approach to rule. And, they both adopt a divide and conquer competition (does anyone really think that breaking up CAS is anything other than divide and conquer dilution of power?).
Schill is very adept at authoritarianism. I like wikipedia’s definition:

Authoritarianism is a form of government characterized by strong central power and limited political freedoms. Individual freedoms are subordinate to the state and there is no constitutional accountability under an authoritarian regime.

Sound familiar? Now that he has a gigantic raise and a 5 year contract, he’s emboldened to expand his authoritarianism even more.

Perhaps, in the sense that a whole lot of pragmatism is needed to get anything done in the NYC real estate market, or here at the University.

Neither strikes me as particularly authoritarian.

It would be interesting to hear more detail on the possible outcome of the CAS change. In ignorance, I’m inclined to assume that it won’t change much, aside from stationery.

Anonymous, yet at the same time I also see other parallels from US history: Join, or die.
And religion: A house divided against itself cannot stand.
And world history: The empire, long divided, must unite; long united, must divide.
Must be the stupid liberal arts education I got here. Whoops.
