    if it’s faculty union, no independent board … UO is going to be a tough sell — even for Berdahl — anybody would have to be crazy.

    Huh? Spell out the logic here. Because I don’t see why the union couldn’t get behind the push for an independent board and thereby increase the chances of its passing. To a lot of folks in Salem, the word “union” commands a lot more respect than “faculty.” Might not help for 2012, mind you, but 2013 is another story.

    Seriously? I know some faculty who have not worked at a school with an local board have been snowed into believing that going local is good for faculty. In my experience it is NOT- the donors and athletics fans run the show and research/teaching loses out unless our program is a special issue for the donors.

    I’ve worked at two institutions with local boards and all it does is makes it easier for the rich superfans to push their agenda. Or people who donate to the governor. Take a look at Florida.
