6/9/2015: Kees de Kluyver out, UO searching for 4 Deans and VP of Research

Dear colleagues,

The end of the academic year is approaching and as we close this door, we are also opening new ones. President Schill will assume office on July 1. Along with this transition, we are preparing to launch a national search to fill five key university leadership positions.

Effective September 15, 2015 the Dean of the Lundquist College of Business Kees de Kluyver will step down to take a year of research leave before returning to teaching in LCB during the 2016 school year. Dean de Kluyver led the business school during a transformational period as we expanded our MBA program in Portland, launched the new Sports Product Management program, and bolstered a competitive school that is attracting the best and brightest students from the state and across the country. I thank Dean de Kluyver for his leadership during this time.

With this departure, we now have five academic leadership positions open and we are organizing national searches for the following: Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication, Dean of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts, Dean of the Lundquist College of Business, and Vice President for Research and Innovation.

We will launch the searching promptly with the goal of having all five positions hired and integrated by the beginning of the 2016 school year. As search committees are formed and the process advances, we will invite you to participate in the process.

In the meantime, the CAS, SOJC, and AAA deans, and VP for Research and Innovation roles will continue to be carried out by the interim appointments of Andrew Marcus, Julie Newton, Brook Muller, and Brad Shelton who have demonstrated strong leadership and maintained our momentum during the last year. This will maintain a strong foundation upon which a new president can build as we prepare for an extraordinary future. An interim dean for LCB will be announced in the coming weeks to assume duties in September.

Thank you for your continued commitment to our students and the UO mission, particularly during this last year of transitions. I am proud to be a part of the University of Oregon community and look forward to the opportunities ahead as I return to provost and we welcome a new president who shares our commitment to academic excellence.

Sincerely,

Scott Coltrane

Interim President

“…who have demonstrated strong leadership and maintained our momentum during the last year.” if only this were true!

I am stating the obvious, of course, but with five academic leadership positions open, President Schill has the grandest of opportunities to be a transformational presence on campus. This could be good.

Will it be the Board’s campus through its agent in JH, or will Schill be the (administrative) leader with guts, purpose, and honest vision the campus has lacked for so long?

    I so want the latter.

    Let’s hope so.

    Can you say “Chuck Lillis?”

I someone can’t learn to respond to tough, fair, and sincere questions with some sort of bearing and professionalism, might be adding Provost to that list.
