Update: The votes are counted, it’s a vote of confidence in the union and its bargaining team. The contract runs until June 30th 2018, so bargaining for the next contract won’t start for a bit more than two years.
10/9/2015: Pres Schill and union will trade beef for ratification vote
Word down at the faculty club last night is that President Schill returned from the Pendleton Roundup with a herd of shorthorn beeves that he and the union leadership drove across Santiam Pass, down to the fecund grass of Autzen Stadium, where they’ve been fattening up for weeks.
Now they’re offering 1/2 side of beef, cut and wrapped, for union ratification votes. (Or $650 in your next paycheck.) So get down to the union office, conveniently located above the Noodlehead on 13th, sign a membership card, and get your vote in.

You can’t vote unless you’ve signed a membership card. You can sign at the meeting, or stop by the UAUO office, conveniently located above the Noodlehead. You can also vote there, Wed – Fri. Here’s the union’s message:
Contract Ratification begins at the General Membership Meeting next week. The meeting will be held at the Ford Alumni Center Ballroom from 5-7pm on Tuesday, October 6. United Academic members can cast their vote on the new contract (thorough bargaining summary here) at the meeting or at the UA office during normal office hours (9am-4:30pm) next Wednesday through Friday. The United Academics office is located at 872 E. 13th Ave. above Noodlehead. Ask for a United Academics door sign while you’re there!
We will have an Assembly of the UA representatives and departmental stewards on Tuesday, October 13 from 5-7pm in Lillis 175. If you are interested in becoming more involved in United Academics, volunteer to become a steward by emailing Chris Sinclair ([email protected]). This entails keeping an ear to the ground about issues that may affect members of your department and talking with your colleagues to increase our membership numbers.
In conjunction with Academic Affairs, we will be organizing a professional development program for new tenure-track faculty. This mentorship program will pair new faculty with existing faculty in order to help new colleagues successfully navigate the road to tenure. If you are a new faculty member interested in participating in this program, or are continuing faculty willing to mentor a new faculty member please contact Dan HoSang for more information ([email protected]). We plan on professional development programs for non-tenure-track faculty as well; stay tuned for details.
The Executive Council of United Academics held our yearly retreat at Wayne Morse Ranch on Saturday, September 19. We talked about many issues we would like to tackle, as well as upcoming challenges for our union (and all unions). One of our primary goals of the next year is to raise our membership numbers; we decided on the lofty goal of 2/3 membership by the end of the academic year. If you are interested in helping us meet these numbers, by visiting colleagues with our new organizer (welcome Elizabeth Pellerito!) to talk about the benefits of union membership, we would like to hear from you. You can volunteer as much or as little time as you have available, and we will provide training and literature to help you out. Please help us meet our goal!
