UO Board appoints competent outsider as new President – John Karl Scholz from UW-Madison

That would be John Karl Scholz, most recently Provost at UW-Madison. [Full disclosure: Scholz was one of my professors when I got my PhD there in 1995, where he was also Director of the Institute for Poverty Research. I liked him a lot, despite the fact I barely passed the field exam.]

I think he has the potential to be a great President for UO. Congratulations to the Trustees and their search committee and yes, I’ll say it – the search firm.

This is exactly what UO needs – a competent outsider with abundant academic and administrative experience, from a university with an international reputation.

Dude, you are such a homer. And by homer I mean old white guy loving old(er) white guys. Pretty sure if it wasn’t someone like him you might have had something a bit more to say about what exactly a ‘national thought leader’ will offer us.

And you’re also kinda burying the lead, Patrick was supposed to go back to being Provost, and Jamie Moffitt?!?

You’re clearly as out of touch as Patrick. Good night Irene.

Wow, woke racist much? What a bigoted comment. While I admire Bill for allowing all commentators to speak their mind on his blog, and for never censoring viewpoints, the racist, sexist, and ageist remark just shared by vhils is repugnant and should have no place in our community. Do better, vhils. Such an embarrassing shame.

So Patrick quit in a fit of pique and now Jamie Moffitt is interim President? Well at least the board is in the loop enough not to give Janet Woodruff-Borden the job!

Comment of the month for “quit in a fit of pique”.

I understand fondness towards one’s former professors, I have no doubt he is competent, but really. Portland State just appointed an extraordinary woman is its president, Oregon state already has a distinguished woman president. Could we have at least an explanation of why Oregon repeats its pattern of the same old same old? Let me repeat again: I have nothing against bland, old, tired, clueless white males, I happen to be one myself. I just don’t think we are the wave of the future.

      Generalize much?

        Not enough.

At least he has decades of experience working at one of the finest public universities on the planet. You can’t say that about everyone.

I think I am quite pleased with his background.

UO played it safe and I hope it works out. Best of luck to him and his family and UO.

Thank you for your disclosure and I appreciate hearing hope in your post. I’m hearing a lot of disappointment today that we have another white male. As a woman I prefer not to be hired just because I am a woman but rather on my qualifications. Yes, he is a white male. The question is what will he do as a white male.
I think it was a bold choice to hire someone who was not the insider and I am waiting to see what he will bring; good or bad.

I would be more concerned about hiring another aloof liberal than a white male

So are we going to disqualify all white males from leadership positions from here on out in deference to default hiring of females? And if so, when will that constitute discrimination and lead to yet another reversal of the pendulum? Just trying to follow along.

  6. Townie 03/13/2023

    Is he is quite liberal?

It is not the color of your skin that matters but the content of your character. Many thanks to Patrick for his tireless efforts.

I don’t think we’d have had the Knight Campus without Patrick’s willingness to work with Uncle Phil. He took a 4 year detour from a very productive research career to do what he thought was right for the university. Like Cincinnatus he can now back to plowing the fields for more Science pubs. My apologies if that’s not a PC reference. (Apologies also to Brad Shelton, who claims the whole thing was his idea.)

Excuse me while I hold a muted applause since this is the 5th white dude President UO had since I started working here. Some of them were more noble then others (The Hat) and some of them were evil (G) but always so white middle aged dudes.

It’s fine, I am sure he is very nice but DAMN.

I was going to criticize this comment for not mentioning other dimensions of what’s important in a Pres, but then I realized my own enthusiasm is in part driven by simple in-group bias – as in, Economists of the World Unite!

Not to say I’d feel the same way if it was, say, Larry Summers.

The evil one gave us our biggest raises.

a competent person in charge of a dysfunctional sinking ship is just a slightly slower trip to the bottom of the ocean….by the way does anyone around here have the newest projections about how much deferred maintenance the main campus has accumulated…or the latest Dogami seismic data about which campus buildings are the most likely to collapse ? oh well at least another shiny new sport pavilion is underway….congrats enablers lol

Wait, I thought Phil Knight was UO President? Is he stepping down?
