ASUO ELECTIONS ’12: The Official Oregon Commentator Voter’s Guide
I’m not sure what it all means, except that the “We are Oregon” slate seem to be shills for the athletic department. Vote to give Rob Mullens more tuition money! The athletic department lawyers are really letting them use Duck logos? A bit obvious, eh?
Funny how admin and larger UO politics are echoed, represented, and fought against in the ASUO microcosm.
I guess it all boils down to Katie and Alex vs Ben and Lamar, who are both, to my knowledge, for the continuation of a public UO. The end result will show us exactly how radical the UO students really are.
We are Oregon’s presidential candidate ASUO Senator Laura Hinman did in fact vote against the ACFC’s budget this year, a budget that essentially capped students’ contribution to the Athletics Department (Ben Bowman of Ben and Lamar chairs the ACFC and likes to mention that he saved students over $200,000 with this approved budget.) The Department was asking for a larger contribution for next year and the ACFC negotiated them down to no increase (actually there was a %0.03 increase due to a bookkeeping error) in student contribution, and subsequently no increase in student tickets. Hinman explains that she disapproved of this deal due to fact the student section wasn’t expanded. It’s hard to tell how she would actually go about getting these tickets should she be elected, but during the debate on Tuesday, Hinman said that more football tickets were her first priority. She said that “only a handful of students actually know what the ASUO is. The only thing that most students know about us is that we give them athletic tickets, so let’s give that to them.”
