UO needs an engineering school like OSU and PSU

5/17/2012. But instead we have a baseball team like they do, thanks to Pat Kilkenny and his tool Dave Frohnmayer. It costs us about $5 million a year. Yes, UO had to borrow money to build his PK park, using future TV revenue as collateral. What a stupid waste. Ask Jamie Moffitt. Nice story in the Oregonian about PSU’s E-school here.

This is an irrational straw man. The reason we don’t have an engineering school has nothing to do with baseball and everything to do with politics. Not having baseball would bring us no closer to having an engineering school.

We also used to have a medical school, but don’t anymore. Would you maybe like to blame the football team for that?

Yes – what the UO needs is a medical school, not an engineering school. I thought there was a shot at making that happen several years back but it fizzled, like so many good ideas do here. Maybe the union can negotiate it into the CBA?

Agreed! In contrast, here, something as simple, inexpensive, and widely beneficial as a proposed Applied Math program went nowhere.

    Question:

Can a state with 3.8 million people support three engineering schools?

California is roughly 10 times as big as Oregon, and they have about 25 or so universities that offer engineering degrees. In short, I think it is entirely plausible.

yes, boils down to money and state politics foe either med or engineering. FYI the UO plan in collboration with OSU failed becauseb OHSU asked forvmillions from the legislature for their end, while UO end was entirely self-financed with tuition.OSU put up a stink about the money and not being part of the plan, even though they clearly didn’t have the UO strength in biological science. then attempt to collaborate with OHSU collapsed on OHSUs end. Just to be clear that every failure didn’t originate in eugene.

    Dog says

yes we need an “engineering” school but not a traditional one like OSU/PSU –
I would say we need an applied earth systems science/policy school with computational emphasis,
large data sets, visualization and the like. That would attract hordes of new graduate
    students.

Remember, OSU is a Land Grant/Sea Grant University.

PSU is just located in portland …

the relevant question is not whether Oregon could support 3 engineering schools, it whether it will. It won’t support the schools it has now.

Oregon spends millions on sports, not much support for education. And Berdahl is about to go on record as endorsing the sports subsidies at UO. Great leadership.

  8. Saying the UO should have an engineering program is akin to saying that OSU should reestablish its J-school (canned by state government in ’91) or start an AAA program. I have no idea why PSU has an engineering program, especially considering it’s relative lack of clout when compared to OSU’s CoE. The point shouldn’t be whether or not we can support an engineering school, but whether the UO can create a high quality engineering program that compete for grants, professors, and high quality students. If not, than it would simply be populated with cut-rates who can’t hack OSU’s program (there are plenty of those, ask any prof in OSU’s business school).

I know what we should all do! Pour millions of dollars into a police department and fool everyone into thinking it will save $70,000.00 a year. Better yet we should make a handshake deal for a coach to get millions and not have any documentation. Maybe we should give our friends jobs instead selecting the most qualified candidate. It all happened? Really?
