Journalism school kickstarter for public records

7/18/2013: No, of course this is not from Journalism Dean Tim Gleason at UO, he’s busy thinking up reasons to hide public records from UO’s student journalists. It’s from the storied University of Missouri School of Journalism. I’d suggest you donate, but 2 days into it they’re already well over their $17,500 target. Instead give to the Oregon Daily Emerald’s public records fund. Or contribute to UO Matters. Just $5 will cover the pitcher of gin and tonics I need after every bargaining live-blog:

Subject: Public Records Request, invoices for advice on faculty union (April, May, June).

Date: July 18, 2013 10:51:03 AM PDT

Dear Ms Thornton and President Gottfredson:

I’ve put a check for $214.50 in the mail for these documents. The funds were raised in part from contributions from UO faculty, staff and students to UO Matters. I reserve the right to petition your denial of my fee-waiver request, and your failure to provide even an inadequate explanation of the reasons for that denial.

I’d appreciate it if you could expedite this request, as many people are curious about HLGR’s billable hours, how much UO is paying for the union negotiating, and the costs and billing for the administration’s “fact check” website at http://uo-ua.uoregon.edu/fact-check/

Thanks for your help, UO Matters

They’ll drag it out and in the end you’ll get a heavily redacted doc. The $214.50 just pays for RG to have some underling use the black marker pen on the doc that they hand over to you. In the end, money down the rat hole.

Sure, JH is a rat-hole, but the delays and fees show how cynical Gottfredson’s transparency promises are, and it’s always fun trying to reconcile Geller’s mad-lib redactions with the law on attorney-client privilege.
