Hmm. Could pay more than my faculty job.

Although, I’m thinking of throwing my hat in for the new assistant market this year, which should also yield a significant salary increase.

    Department of Labor Disagrees: http://www.bls.gov/ooh/Life-Physical-and-Social-Science/Economists.htm

“Employment of economists is projected to grow 6 percent from 2010 to 2020, slower than the average for all occupations. ” (Other occupations at 14% I believe).

“However, employment in the federal government—the largest employer of economists—is expected to decline. As a result, demand for economists in the federal government is likely to be limited.”

“In particular, those with strong quantitative and analytical skills and related work experience should have the best job prospects.”

SOOOooooooooooooooooo, same trend as all the other social sciences. Your degree doesn’t matter but if you can crunch numbers companies are willing to hire you. In comparison, look at market research analyst projected at 41% growth. (http://www.bls.gov/ooh/business-and-financial/market-research-analysts.htm#tab-6 ).

Economists will take many of the the market research analyst positions. Sounds like the definition of an economist will shift. Department of labor is just trying to reduce the supply of economists to increase their salary.
