“The State Board of Higher Education will consider a policy that would require people to agree not to carry guns if they want to do any business on university property, whether as a student, professor, employee, contractor, vendor, sports fan or visitor to any university event.”
I assume that those of us who already have indefinite employment contracts will be able to refuse to sign such an agreement.
When guns are outlawed, only tenured professors will have guns.
I will not sign such an agreement.
“…He hopes students challenge the policy by choosing to attend school where concealed guns are allowed…”
This might be another good way for the various OUS institutions to differentiate themselves. UO for research and football, Eastern for packing heat.
Can they ban the campus police having guns too?
So, can UO also prevent students and faculty from using the right to free speech?
OSU tried to have a policy like this, but the courts shot it down… wouldn’t be surprised if those same courts rule against OUS as well.
Anyone who works at the University has already agreed to not carry a gun. It is a condition of employment. The students and visitors are the only ones who have to “agree” to follow the policy. And since it is a policy and not a law, and the law allows people to carry on campuses, there are no consequences to someone who doesn’t follow the policy. The only ones that can be punished are the employees, who would most likely be fired for violating the condition of employment.
Has anyone ever realized that the ROTC keeps machine guns on campus. I dont see how banning guns will do anything. Its not like the people intending to use the guns to commit crimes are going to follow the no gun rule.
I just cannot seem to understand a counter argument for carrying concealed on campus. I would like to challenge someone to provide us with factual proof of any college campus shooting in the last 100 years that was committed by a valid concealed handgun permit holder vs. shootings committed by someone illegally carrying. Look what happened in Ohio, a campus with a “no guns” rule.
If they outlaw guns from campus only outlaws will have guns.
I just cannot seem to understand an argument for carrying concealed on campus. Has a concealed firearm ever actually STOPPED a violent crime in progress on a University campus that permitted them? Do we have any good statistics concerning firearms discharges on college campuses? Without that, all we have is maybes–MAYBE VA Tech could have been stopped by an armed student/faculty member. MAYBE a shooter would be able to sneak a weapon onto campus for such purposes more easily if they were permitted. We don’t know, and honestly, after all my years here I haven’t ever felt the need to have one on campus. Home is another story.
I just heard the news. Who is carrying on campus today?
