12/6/2010: Stefan Verbano of the ODE digs into the recordings of the OUS meeting on the new UO athletic complex, back in June:
At one point in the meeting, however, Lariviere spoke frankly about how the school has been obliged to embrace such projects even if they do not buttress the University’s educational mission.
“It really doesn’t have that much to do with the central mission of the University of Oregon,” he said. “All of us who know better need to be educating the public that athletics is entertainment and education and research is why the University exists.”
This quote is going to make it a bit harder for Knight to deduct the donation from his taxes, that’s for sure. And Lariviere has stopped making these sorts of comments since. Too bad, it was refreshing while it lasted. Meanwhile we still haven’t been able to get copies of the gift agreements from UO’s public records officer Liz Denecke.
