11/8/2010: When the Athletic Directors at other universities start saying the academic side of UO is not benefiting from our athletic success, maybe it’s time to do something about it. From the UW AD – before they lost the game ;)
“What they have done here athletically is nothing short of a miracle. It is fabulous what they have invested and how they have done it. But it is a shame that the whole enterprise isn’t benefiting (from the athletic success), and that’s one thing that is very much a sense of pride at the University of Washington â that our whole enterprise is excellent in all we do.”
Unfortunately our new AD Ron Mullens’s contract gives him no incentive to change this and use the athletic success to reduce the current subsidies that students and the academic side give to athletics: parking, $2 million a year for the Jock Box, legal services, etc.
If Mullens does decide to cut a few money losing sports and end these subsidies, the way his contract is written he could personally lose money, because UO will then be less likely to do well in the “Directors Cup” competition for AD’s.
