Yet again, nearly every Division I athletics program spent more than it made last year. And at a time when many are feeling pressure to achieve self-sufficiency, these programs are relying more than ever on institutional subsidies to balance their budgets.
UO is no exception. We lost money last year, even ignoring the $1.5 million lottery money subsidy, free land for the Jock Box and Arena (?), and covering Lorraine Davis’s pay from the academic budget. This year we will all be paying for the Matt Court underground parking, via higher parking fees.
So, I wonder how long the Athletic Department will continue claiming they are self-sufficient. This mantra started under Frohnmayer and Kilkenny, so they could justify doing whatever the hell they wanted. Place your bets on the right. Hint: In Oregon it’s a crime to make false claims when asking for charitable contributions:
