8/16/2010: Good story on out of state students at UO, from Bill Graves in the Oregonian:
… The California students are like gold to Oregon universities because they pay triple the tuition charged to resident students. At UO, a full-time out-of-state student will pay $25,830 in tuition and fees next year compared to $8,190 for an Oregonian.
The California students are not displacing Oregon students, said Roger Thompson, UO’s vice provost for enrollment management. The imports help the school sustain its Oregon student enrollment in the face of declining state support, he says.
UO resident freshman enrollment, expected to be 2,200 this fall, has fluctuated between 2,100 and 2,400 for the past five years. The proportion of Oregon students in incoming UO freshman classes, however, has dropped from 70 percent in 2005 to 59 percent last year. That’s because the university has increased its freshman enrollment and filled most of the new slots with non-Oregonians.
… William Campodonico-Burnett, 18, of Santa Cruz, whose stepfather is a carpenter and mother a personal trainer, will attend UO with a $9,600 scholarship this year and $7,800 for each year after. Several California students said that with scholarships, they can attend UO for little more than UC, where the average resident tuition is $9,285.
