Why can’t Willie Lyles get paid?

7/9/2011: John Canzano (left) tries to explain why it’s OK for Oregon to pay Chip Kelly $3.5 million, but not OK for Oregon to pay Willie Lyles $25,000. I’m no psychologist, but I think they call the micro-expression of the guy on the right “WTF?”

These commentators agree on one point: the UO athletic program is very badly run. I find it painful to hear the university criticized in this way. And I fear that the pain is only beginning.

I am a UO graduate and have a lot invested in the university’s reputation. There is an arrogance about the UO these days from athletics and administration that is disturbing. I think both will be taken down a notch. I predict Kelly will be gone and Pres. L. will be considered the rebound president before we settle on someone more stable. Hopefully, UO will return to a quality liberal arts university with only respectable athletics. NIke’s control of our image has amounted to losses instead of gains.

Anonymous UO Grad is right on Nike, but should cut some slack for Richard Lariviere. Reversal of the damage done by Dave Frohnmayer and John Moseley will take some time, requiring a deeply cooperative effort by the Faculty and the President. Since Lariviere’s arrival, the instruments for such governance, badly eroded by the previous administration, have been built. Now let’s see if we can make them work. Old Man is hopeful.

Well put Old Man, UO Matters is also hopeful.

I’m not hopeful. The approach of the Lariviere regime is strictly top-down. Too many important decisions are made without faculty input. Witness the recent Ali Bongo fiasco. “Arrogance” is a correct description. Another is stupidity.

Also true, I have seen both.

I’d hazard a guess that Canzano was referring to Kilkenny & Bellotti with that last line. Also, I understand that this thing is murky and the facts known are confusing, but Canzano should know better than to equate James’ graduation assist with the payment. That was well before the payment issue, and when he made the move he wasn’t even considering UO.

I do think this is the sad undercurrent to this whole fiasco: if you’re a big-time coach you can be paid well and be a “friend” to the students, but if you’re actually out in the communities being friendly/helpful you’re barred from having a business in college football. The deck’s stacked for everyone not at the top.

yeah the AD situation here has been weird for a long time – not sure that the UO has had a proper and experienced and professional AD for some time.

    Moos was not.

    Kilkenny – zero experience.

    Davis as interim – WTF?

Bellotti as a lame duck (is he still with ESPN?)

For better or worse, Mullens at least has a pedigree in being an AD.
