update – for Eugene, not clear the methods for the 2 years are directly comparable. UO data is correct however.
9/19/2011: 2010 Eugene violent crime rates fall again – a 14% fall from 2009 reports, and the continuation of a long trend. Eugene property crimes also fell – burglary by 31%.
Nationwide, violent crime fell 6%. Why? Smarter policing, aging population, more bad people locked up longer, more young men getting out their aggression by shooting at monsters in violent video games instead of at each other.
The 2010 UO data is not yet out, here’s 2007-2009:
Maybe to protect the Officers and Students from the same people/criminals that the armed Eugene Police Department Officers deal with.
99% of the job is dealing with drunk or stoned students and fans. Sorry, but that’s the truth – look at the numbers. Adding guns to that mix is a really bad idea and is not likely to end well.
Protect us from terrorists? No, they used that one already…
