12/24/2011: Rob, please stop maxing out our Visa card on presents like this – you’re bankrupting us.
We’re still trying to get him to show us the contract, but basically athletic director Rob Mullens agreed to accept 60 seconds of air-time during the UO-UCLA broadcast for this FOX produced ad, instead of taking the $500,000 that the time would have brought on the open market. Mullens thinks we should be happy, because the spot promotes UO’s academic side. I must have blinked during that part. Hilariously, the script for the UCLA ad is almost exactly the same: “We are UCLA” instead of “We are Oregon”. UCLA does say “We are professors” instead of “We are instructors”. At least Fox is clear on the difference.
Didn’t you catch the “we are instructors”. Looks like the NTTF’s got represented at least….
Lets see, divide $500,000 by the 800 or so NTTF’s. So this cost about $600 each.
Merry Xmas, and Go Ducks!
Any idea if the Rose Bowl contract has a similar clause?
Or divide it by $10,000 for a full ride in-state tuition scholarship – this cost 50 of them.
It also covered the ever important, “I know how to do back flips” and “look I’m on old man who cuts hair”. Evidence of the high caliber academics at the U of O indeed.
How is this different than the regular UO spot… both cost money to produce, and the other one shows more outdoor activities than anything academic anyway. All Universities get to play spots during games, stop hating on athletics for no reason. There are reasons to dislike the department but this is not one of them
don’t hate athletics at all, just don’t like paying their bills for them.
Aside from the incidental attention to anything intellectual, there’s not one distinctive thing about the university said in this spot. Any university could use the same script.
yup, I just looked – the UCLA script is the same. Nice catch.
