1/23/2012: Or maybe that offer wasn’t rich enough, according to the latest from the RG
and Canzano.
1/22/2012: I didn’t check, but I assume that’s some sort of a football team, not a rum drink with an umbrella. Story here. More here. Under the NCAA college football is so corrupt it soils everyone who touches it, even an apparently good guy like Kelly. Presumably he’ll leave UO holding the bag for any NCAA penalties regarding Willie Lyles. According to Kelly’s contract Rob Mullens could fine him to recover UO’s costs, but I don’t think Mullens has got the stones – and anyway, it’s just the academic side’s money. His UO contract is here.
Even ignoring the possible infractions, Kelly will have to pay UO some serious money to break his contract – $3,750,000 by my count. What do you bet the athletic side tries to keep it all?
I hear Joe Paterno is available.
Whoops, never mind.
Notice how the rats quickly desert a sinking ship? Reminds me of Pete Carroll and how he had said he
was a lifer at USC — until the NCAA came calling, then he got out of there real fast for the Seattle
Seahawks:
Not long before an NCAA report on violations at USC under Carroll was released, on January 10, 2010,
Carroll told his players that he would resign his position with the Trojans and become the new head
coach of the Seattle Seahawks. According to the Los Angeles Times, Carroll came to agreement with the
Seahawks on a 5-year $33 million contract to become head coach.
It will be interesting to see what UO gets from the NCAA in the next few months…
Wait, I thought if someone left the athletic department for a better job we had to pay *him*.
I’D LIKE CHIP KELLY TO LEAVE. GET A COACH WHO REQUIRES FOOTBALL TEAM MEMBERS TO COMPLY W STUDENT CODE OF ETHICS, THE “I LOVE MY DUCKS” THEME SONG SHOULD NOT BE
“I LOVE MY THUGS”. WHILE THEY ARE AT IT… THE U OF O SHOULD BRING THE HEAD COACH SALARY BACK DOWN TO EARTH.
KELLY HAS A
six-year deal that includes $20.5 million in guaranteed money, though there are also numerous incentives in the contract that will bolster Kelly’s pay. As it is, averaging $3.42 million over the next six years means Kelly’s salary ranks amongst the highest paid college coaches in the nation.
Maybe this will give the AD pause before blowing more academic money on an autsen expansion. (did I say that? That’s crazy… Of course it won’t.)
Dog, who is somewhat NFL literate
says that there is no way Kelly makes
it in the NFL any more than Dennis Erickson
tried to do (or Rich Brooks for that matter)
And Erickson didn’t do too well at ASU, having
lost 3 of 4 games with Arizona and getting fired
for those losses.
How about Lorraine Davis? Jim Bean can end his sabbatical early, go back to being Provost.
Phil Knight probably speed dialed Mike Bellotti to come back to UO…
It will be interesting to read Knight’s counteroffer.
Oh, well, looks like Chip isn’t off to Tampa Bay just yet. Too bad, I was looking forward to a losing season and the subsequent amazing increases in student GPAs. Maybe next year.
Dog says
Chip Kelly apparently is not stupid
he will make about the same money at UO as in NFL
and he will surely win more games here than at Tampa Bay
