Economics, not athletics

5/17/2012: That’s the explanation the SacBee gives for the lucrative UO trade in CA students. Complete with Roger Thompson quote. Not a popular argument with the UO central administration, which loves spending that out-of-state tuition money on sports and on their own junkets to bowl games (link fixed) – and then claiming it’s all part of their job to increase enrollment. Tax deductible!

This article emphasizes time to completion as a primary concern for parents. Our advantage there is at risk, given continued under-investment in faculty. In my dept many students now have difficulty enrolling in required courses.

the claims that UOPAC12 atletic visibility in california is the primary reason for our successin ca recruitment or that it is a trivial factor are equally stupid. our success is a fragile combination of academic and athletic success and visibility, a unique locale, and ‘push factors in ca. any of these could turn against us quickly, even our academic strengths, esp given the irrefutable incompetence, arrogance and lack of foresight demonstrated by JH leadership in recent years– but I’m only stating what’s obvious to everyone outside JH or those who left over the period.
