Steve Duin interviews Jennifer Freyd on allegations and cover-up

In the Oregonian, here:

Did Duck Coach Dana Altman truly not know, as he has claimed, that in recruiting Austin, he was welcoming to campus a player who had previously been linked to a case of sexual assault while at Providence?

Is the university serving anyone when it refuses to name the administrators who was first informed of the sexual assault allegations in March?

And what should students, faculty and parents make of the fact that UO took its sweet time responding to these allegations at any discernible public level? …

As it stands, the UO administration has known about these allegations for eight weeks. “We have well-articulated rules and requirements to initiate an investigation,” Freyd said. “One of the things I would have expected by now, or long ago, is some indication that an investigation was occurring. Why did it take almost two months for the campus community to become aware of this?”

Because that silence was awfully convenient for Altman and the Ducks’ athletic program.

And that should be especially frustrating for parents who still have daughters on campus.

If Altman didn’t know, he should have before signing Austin. Austin was suspended indefinitely in November by Providence. In late December, he was suspended for the entire season, for not upholding his responsibilities as a student athlete. Obviously, Providence considered his infraction a serious one. Either Altman knew or didn’t care enough to find out.

    snowball on Altman thread writes:

Altman should do the right thing and offer his resignation.

No UO professor has called for anyone’s resignation. Professor Freyd has spoken the media but has taken absolutely no action. Professor Harbaugh hosts this site but has not publicly called for any action.

Altman recruited Austin after he was kicked out of Providence University for alleged rape. Altman let the alleged players play in the NCAA tournament. These two behaviors are beyond reprehensible, as is the fact that not a single UO professor has publicly called for his resignation.

My favorite part of the protest was when Jennifer Freyd led a chant:

2-4-6-8, why can’t they just masturbate?
