UO’s Institutional Research unleashes new website

I know what you’re thinking: Johnson Hall is going to start making decisions based on data? That would be news. Last time we checked in Provost Jim Bean didn’t even know how to calculate a percentage. But if they ever want to, they can now get slightly more info, in much prettier form:

Sent on behalf of JP Monroe—

Dear Colleagues,

The Office of Institutional Research has taken a big step forward in providing information and analytical tools to the campus community. Based on consultation with our partners on campus, we have developed new ways of turning data into information that you can use.

Our redesigned web site (http://ir.uoregon.edu/) provides a wealth of information about our students, personnel, and institution using interactive dashboards. These new tools are designed as a resource for users to quickly and easily obtain University and School / College level data.

On the site, you’ll find new information about University of Oregon’s degree recipients, results from the One Year Later Survey of our recent graduates, and new ways to examine trends in faculty and staff. Over the next year, we plan to expand and enhance the tools you’ll find on the site. If you have any comments, questions, or ideas for future development, please let us know.

Nice work JP, using Tableau is most excellent, although there is a definite learning curve with it.

For students out there, learning Tableau (+ python) will get you many good and needed jobs in data visualization.

In any event, this is a good step that might help with decision by anecdote and perception that seems to permeate the UO.
