CAS Deans and President Schill joined the #blacklivesmatter march

Mike Gottfredson hid in his office and made Robin Holmes come out and talk to the sexual assault protestors. Our new leadership has a bit more common sense:

Subject: cas-heads: Solidarity Protest March Today
Date: Thu, 12 Nov 2015
To: [email protected] <[email protected]>

Dear Colleagues,

There will be a student-organized march today to show support for students of color in creating a safe, just and equitable academic environment. This is part of a national effort in the wake of the events at Missouri. The march will leave the Ford Alumni Center at 1pm and proceed to Johnson Hall. (There is a talk by Charles Ogletree at noon at the Ford Alumni Center: (http://around.uoregon.edu/content/black-lives-matter-charles-ogletree-speak-uo-nov-12).

Participation is of course a personal decision, but it would be a powerful positive message to have a faculty and administrator allies at this march. Bruce, Hal and Karen will be there.

Please consider participating in the march, and please let your faculty and staff know about the march timing and location. The organizers are planning an event that ends at 3:30, so if you are interested in participating, but unable to participate in the entire event, it could still make sense to participate in part of the event.

Thank you,

Bruce Blonigen, Associate Dean for Social Sciences
Karen Ford, Associate Dean for Humanities
Hal Sadofsky, Associate Dean for Natural Sciences
W. Andrew Marcus, Interim Tykeson Dean College of Arts and Sciences

Is one to gather from this that the CAS deans do not think that UO has been providing a “safe, just and equitable academic environment” for students of color? I would like to hear more from them about this. What specifically do they have in mind, and what do they propose to do? Or is this simply an empty gesture, or meant just for show, or for other purposes? Really, if they are saying things are literally unsafe for such students here, it is vitally important to know how. If they really think that CAS or other professors are providing an “inequitable academic environment,” we need to know more. Are professors grading unfairly, or treating students in inequitable ways? Or do they have something else in mind? Please tell us.

They have been telling you. You haven’t been listening, or, more precisely, you’ve been hearing only what you want to hear.

President Schill was not there due to traveling. Seen at the event – Scott Coltrane and other Johnson Hall employees.

The email above was one of many circulated to ask colleges/divisions for participation and support especially in light of University of Missouri events.

Black Lives Do Matter, as a matter of fact, ALL lives matter. The UO is lacking when it comes to a Black student population. Let us show that we are welcoming and supportive of all.

Schill cancelled the trip and was at the demonstration, he’s actually in the picture and the RG had a picture as well. And you’re right, there was a large cluster of Coltrane and other JH admins, and some minders for the athletes circulating as well.
