Should out-of-state history majors subsidize in-state math majors?

2/22/2016: Given that in-state tuition does not cover the cost of a UO education, that would be a likely outcome from SB 1540, Sen. Mark Haas’s proposed legislation for a study, here:

But PSU Economist Tom Potiowsky is skeptical of the narrow focus on increasing the number of mathematics majors:

I would prefer to see the incentive extended to students to apply that mathematics in many of the occupations which we dearly need in this state, which besides the traditional areas of business and engineering, also includes government policy analysis and yes, even the Arts.

That would be the Republican Governor of Tennessee. The NYT has the story here. No evidence of mandatory re-education camps, as of yet.

The “mathematics majors” language was introduced as an amendment. The original bill said “mathematics-related degrees,” which makes a lot more sense.

Less surprisingly, the amendments also changed “evaluation on providing a tuition waiver” to the hot-air “consider various potential methodologies” to “determine the best method of increasing the number of mathematics majors.”
