Faculty Club open tonight 5-8PM

Rumor has it that the faculty’s official safe space will be open from 5-8 today (Wed) and tomorrow.

11/1/2016: Real-life UO Faculty Club to replace deplorable on-line rumor mill

For years this blog has reported on the rumors heard “down at the Faculty Club”, on everything from the next athletic scandal to how long we’ll be stuck with this Dean or that VP. I’ve received more than a few emails from confused faculty, asking me where the club is located and what they have to do to join. They usually drop it after I explain the initiation rituals. But occasionally I tell them the truth – UO does not have a faculty club.

But now we do – complete with a bar and child-care:

Colleagues,

We are pleased to let you know that at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9, we will open the new University of Oregon Faculty Club in a new designated space in the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. This idea has been in the works for a number of years, and is meant to provide a place where statutory faculty and their guests can gather in a welcoming and collegial space.

The UO Faculty Club will feature full no-host bar service and complimentary snacks. It will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays through December 1 and resume operations January 11 at the beginning of the winter term. This effort is a pilot project to determine if the club can support regular service. If it is successful, then we will look at extending operations on a permanent basis.

A faculty club like this is something that faculty members have long requested at the UO. The minor renovations needed to accommodate this pilot effort are in line with the long-term needs of the museum, which will also use the room for other events and occasions.

Ultimately, we believe this could be a great way for faculty at the UO to get to know each other outside of the departments and colleges where most spend their time. While this is a social club, we hope that it is also a catalyst for relationship building and collaboration among faculty across the UO campus.

Regards,

Michael H. Schill, President and Professor of Law

James Harper, Chair of the Faculty Club Board and Associate Professor of Art History

I think on opening day, UOmatters should show up

    Faculty Club

Pro tip for Law faculty: check your outfit before showing up at the club. (You will thank me latter.)

Too bad retired and emeriti are not welcome, as according to the rules they are not statutory faculty. They have the time and resources to make the place financially viable.

    Begone! No drinks for you!!

Probably an oversight to be addressed later. Not sure if the Club will let them run a tab though, given the attrition rate.

Not to mention eating all of the snacks and demanding Sarsparilla from the bar.

The definition of statutory faculty found on the Academic Affairs website and the definition offered here seem to be different.

    From AA:

“Statutory faculty” is further defined in the UO’s constitution. In that document, statutory faculty is defined as: “…the body of professors consisting of the university president, tenure-related officers of instruction, career non-tenure-track officers of instruction, and officers of administration who are tenured in an academic department.”

AA goes on to clarify that “retired and emeriti faculty members are not members of the statutory faculty.”

The big difference is the career research faculty. I guess they are invited, but this may cause confusion for the bouncers. Speaking of which, how do you prove you are a career faculty member and not some lowly adjunct? Or worse, a grad student?

Just go MASH style on them and bring Radar to the club…

I have been an OA for the 8 years I have been at the UO and have no idea what “OA” and “tenure” have to do with each other…

The faculty club was open to everyone when it was located in the Collier House.

So it was basically a club, not a faculty club. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I think we already have a few hundred other venues like that in the area.

I am an emeritus professor but had no problem being admitted to the club last week. Seems to me foolish to exclude emeriti / emeritae from the ‘club’ and for that matter no reason to exclude other retired members of the university community. I suspect that this wording ‘statutory’ falls into the category of ‘unintended consequences’ and can easily be remedied by a presidential edict. But let me check with Obama to see how this might best be done.

Is anyone checking “statutory faculty” cards at the door? If so, maybe there is a market for fake ID’s.
