Back in 2014 President Gottfredson and the UO Police Department went through some amazing contortions to cover up the rape allegations against Dana Altman’s basketball players. I feel we really need a more nuanced set of language for dealing with this topic. Using the same word for “regretful drunken hookup” as “holding someone down and forcing yourself on them” really makes any kind of conversation on the matter difficult at best. Thanks to the crying wolf syndrome, I tend to assume reports like this are drunken mistakes rather than the much more grave acts that do happen in this broken world, even when such an assumption is (admittedly) unwarranted. Turning the problem over to the SAFE website instead of the police only reinforces this sentiment.
Having said all that, my heart breaks for everyone involved.
