Provost Phillips announces Ducks will cancel Colorado game due to shortage of assistant coaches willing to work at current wage

Just kidding, UO pays its coaching staff whatever it takes, e.g.:

On the other hand the university run Vivian Olum day care center has been cutting back on hours, and is now cancelling full days of care for the children of UO faculty and other employees, because they can’t hire enough staff and student workers at current wages:

Why not give day-care workers a raise, so we can hire enough of them? I don’t know, but in the Senate today our provost seemed to argue he didn’t think it would work because labor supply curves no longer slope upwards.

Tell it to the athletic department!

I’m a glass half-full guy, but I found it depressing to listen to our provost throw shade on the sign of the first derivative of the labor supply curve. The fact he started with “I’m not an expert but …” didn’t help. It was a Jim Bean moment, which I hope won’t be repeated.

We could pay 22 child care workers with the salary of a single assistant football coach, according to these figures. Maybe the expression “no-brainer” just doesn’t mean what I think it means.

And yikes, $16/hour! Minimum wage in Lane County is $12.75/hour. Yeah, they need to offer higher wages to the people we leave our kids with all day while we excellence.

What are the (reduced) hours of Vivian Olum?

    • Anonymous 10/29/2021

Operating hours are reduced 90 minutes from the beginning of the school year now 8:30-4:30 (originally 8-5:30). In addition all classrooms but one will be on rolling closures, with most closed 6-7 full days between now and December 17. While there is a prorated refund for the closure days, there is not tuition reduction for families for the reduced daily hours.

I’m sick of the excuses trying to blame the unions.. unions don’t get in the way of getting their members paid more.
