Thanks to a reader for the news. Apparently this has gone viral. There’s a story in the Daily Emerald here:
According to Director of Issues Management and University of Oregon Spokesperson Angela Seydel, the university found Serrato’s statementsin his Instagram video “abhorrent and not in alignment with our values or mission.”
Seydel also said that Serrato has been placed on “administrative leave” and an investigation has been opened.
Administrative leave means that Serrato is taking paid time off, pending a university investigation.
In the post, Serrato said to followers, which included some UO students, to “go f— yourself if you voted for Donald Trump.”
Serrato concluded his story, saying “I hope you go jump off of a f—ing bridge,” with a peace sign.
Seydel said that the university has opened an investigation into the matter and are reviewing it under “university policies and the individual’s role as a public employee.”
According to Seydel, while the university is investigating, they will be providing “support for concerned students and employees, including resources for mental and emotional health.”
That last part seems a bit Orwellian to me. What would the appropriate response be? Perhaps President Scholz should look to Shakespeare:
“We consider it was excess of wine that set him off. … If little faults proceeding on distemper shall not be winked at then …”
It’s gone beyond the Emerald…

Don’t care what this man says on his own time, (I believe in the 1st amendment) but I do question how the University hires a man who was complicit in a hazing death at Fresno State? The propensity of ideologically unhinged staff that have been hired is the concerning point. Just look back 7 months to the vile “protests” that took place on campus and the significant amount of teaching staff that took part and participated in these events (against university policy) , shows where the administration and staff stand on ideological issues rather than a commitment to unbiased leadership and scholarship. 4 years ago did the administration provide “safe spaces” and “time outs” when the current federal administration won an election? NO. not that anyone should require or should want this type of diapering as an adult. We do a disservice to people when we treat them with kid gloves.

There’s a long history of hiring convicted felons who have served their time to “scare straight” others with a high propensity to make the same mistakes. Presumably this was part of the reason UO greek life hired Mr. Serrato. I’d want to hear more about his job performance before jumping to any conclusions. Meanwhile the news that UO is offering mental counseling to students because they’d been told on Instagram to jump off a fucking bridge is fucking hilarious, and whoever is responsible for that one deserves to see their budget jump off a fucking cliff.
Is that counseling in house, or is it an outside contractor?
The Emerald story is a masterpiece! Everything reads like brilliant satire, but I have no doubt that it is completely genuine. Not just the poor frat functionary — a drunk on a no-doubt shocking election night leading to possibly his losing his job? — but also the cast of mental health functionaries, the administrators, and even the $100 K donor who is threatening to withold the next donation if the poor guy doesn’t get fired by the end of month.
Really, everyone should just [redacted for violating policy on making fun of people’s names] chill. As people like Phil Knight used to say, a Teachable Moment.
Go Ducks!
Ask yourself why he went in this rant. It’s panic realizing the Fed DOE is either gonna be eliminated, or greatly diminished. What role does the DOE play in facilitating student loans? What happens to institutions such as UOwe if they no longer can rely on taxpayer subsidies?
Several alums of the University of San Francisco have discussed with admins the future of USF, and other private unis, if the very real possibility of DJT’s threats to kill off DOE becomes manifest. It sure as hell t’aint good…
Just one more not very surprising example of the University’s less than stellar record to control fraternity ‘life’ at this campus: https://eugeneweekly.com/2024/10/03/kept-in-the-dark/
At least this time the result of their incompetence isn’t a series of assualts on our students.
