LANE COUNTY, Ore. — Lane County Commissioner Jay Bozievich is blaming University of Oregon-related coronavirus cases for preventing the county from moving down a risk level.

On Tuesday, Gov. Kate Brown announced that Lane County would remain in the extreme risk category, impacting the capacities of businesses countywide and their ability to open up indoor dining. At the same time, 10 other counties in the state were downgraded.

According to Bozievich, Lane County’s two week total of reported cases was a mere 27 too high to be moved down a risk level. In that same timeframe, the University of Oregon reported 259 cases. …

Last I looked UO students had about twice the number of positive tests as OSU students.

I don’t like Bozievich’s tone, and his attempt to divide UO from the rest of the county. But I’ve talked with business owners and other Lane County residents who blame UO for the failure to move into a lower risk category. It really is poor behavior on the part of UO students, and poor performance by the institution. It’s embarrassing and damaging. It makes us look like jackasses, because we are.
