Please help Pres Schill spend $21.7M in institutional Covid relief money

This is on top of another $22.8M that’s just for our students. Presumably it’s all got to be spent this year. What a problem! Fortunately it’s a bargaining year, our faculty and staff have suffered plenty during the pandemic, and we’re eager to help.

Back of the envelope this alone would fund a 5% raise – almost enough to cover the 5.9% increase in the cost of living last year. Add in our enrollment increases and 5% min tuition increases (~2% real) for the next few years, plus a state with so much money they’re reducing the normal BCR test from 1 to 0.5, and you’ve got a university with plenty of cash to give out for real raises of the sort needed to move us up to the middle of the bottom quintile of our AAU public comparators.

And if our VPFA shows the academic side the sort of creativity she showed the jocks when she raided the arena bond reserves to pay the coaches, UO might even be able to offer a bit more – especially now that the early retirements will cut salary costs and help keep PERS costs down through a quirk in the PERS calculations.

Hell, with this kind of money UO could even build a new AC plant for Knight Campus 2.0!

Looks like they forgot to spend anything on day-care workers.

Is that 5% number for faculty and staff, or just faculty? Asking for a friend.

      Everyone except the coaches.

Childcare crisis or raises is too easy and too good of a use.

    My guess.

    Fiscal substitution.

They’ll spend the Federal money on salaries or something they are required to, and then unrestricted funds goes to special projects, pork, or hiring another dean or vice provost.

He wants to keep it all in Johnson Hall.

That’s only about 20 assistant football coaches, including benefits. We’re going to need to raise that tuition a bit more.

You mean they weren’t telling the truth when they told the SEIU bargaining team that all federal monies were already spent?
