Big step forward for Academic Freedom

That would be in Saskatchewan. The Chronicle has the story: Provost told Deans they couldn’t criticize his hare-brained restructuring scheme, a Dean wrote a public letter criticizing it, Provost fired the Dean. Story went public, and now the Dean has his job back and the Provost has “resigned.”

Meanwhile, back in Oregon, Mike Gottfredson has been stonewalling on Academic Freedom for 40 days. He’s waiting for his new interim General Counsel Sam Hill to tell him to sign it or not. Who the hell is Sam Hill? I don’t know. I made a public records request for her resume and job application cover letter 2 weeks ago, she’s still stonewalling on releasing it:

Dear Ms Hill –

It’s now been two weeks since I made the public records request below. I’d appreciate it if you would provide the records you have, i.e. your resume and cover letter, without further delay.

The GC’s office has sole authority to write legal opinions for UO, but they won’t let the UO faculty see their resumes.

Did Sam respond to the the Request as specified in law? If not it is time for the DOJ SAG… Perhaps getting the state involved with what is going on down here would be a good thing.

She still hasn’t. Actually, now that UO is no longer a state agency, the Lane County DA is in charge of making UO comply with the public records law. And I have the feeling that Sam Hill is going to be the least of the complaints they’ll be getting about Dave Hubin’s public record’s office.

Well, on July 1…still a long way to go.
