Ducks celebrate MLK day with fake search for new bald white coach

1/20/2013. Mullens will announce the hire today. The RG editors called for UO to follow state law:

Turns out that promoting Helfrich without interviewing a qualified minority candidate — or at least making a good-faith attempt to find such a candidate — would violate Oregon law. Three years ago, the Oregon Legislature passed pioneering legislation that made Oregon the first state in the nation to require its public universities to interview a qualified minority candidate before hiring a head coach or athletic director. The bill had overwhelming support in both chambers of the Legislature, passing the Senate with all 29 senators present voting yes.

The intent of Mitch Greenlick’s law is pretty clear, but football trumps it. It seems AD Rob Mullens found a few minority candidates willing to play along with the pretense of an open search. But remember this is a university that doesn’t even hold open public searches for president or provost.
Personally I’ve always preferred Malcolm X to King – maybe next year UO should honor him?

I guess they decided they should quickly fill the position before some smart ass proposes they grab several million out of the head football coach salary & use it for say, funding the new student union building.

That was one posh contract Chipper had…. who knows if they will add even more fluff to it?

Now Chip has to give $3.8 million back to the U (again, the Student Union fund still needs money!!).. & sell his million dollar home, perhaps for a loss.
    Poor guy.
His contract said the U of O had to provide him 2 cars at all times. Recent media shows him driving a large Mercedes Benz SUV.
That’s got to cost a pretty penny.
Are the students & faculty @ the U of O going to stand idly by while the sports coach gets treated like royalty or are they going to speak up about it?
I know, it seems a foregone reality that the head football coach gets over endowed, but making some fuss about it might at least draw media attention to just how imbalanced it is.
Coach VS teacher which is more important?
Just how much disparity in pay scales & perks?
Once you know the details, it is outrageous.

Heck yeah we’re going to speak up about it – by continuing the sold-out streak at Autzen next season! Ooooooooooooo

In the meantime, how about that bball team? Altman deserves a raise and a few Mercedes SUVs!

Yup, this is what I do with my weekends while I’m watching the games, and waiting for Hubin’s office to redact public records.

9 million over a 5 year span…talk about obscene. How is it that a football coach gets paid more than a governor?

Gawd…Another state employee gonna take a huge bite out of our PERS account. Gotta be proud!

      He’s tier 3 right?

PS I think we’re office neighbors AOL!

Know what cracks me up, Bill? That all these trolls hide behind “Anonymous” and most don’t have the biscuits or sausage to man up with their real names.

The fact is (and everyone knows it) that the UO had already made up its mind about Helfrich before Kelly even make up his mind about leaving. That we then paid how many thousands of dollars in transportation, salaries, wine and dining to pretend that we were actually taking any other candidate seriously is a sickening waste of money.

Thanks for always calling it like you see it. I don’t always agree with everything you say, but when I do, I’m woman enough to provide at least part of my name. ; )

Beckie J, you better start making them eggs right. I don’t want no more nasty, sloppy, runny eggs!
