I doubt that the HC was the guy in charge of a NIke marketing scheme. But, dayum, “Savages?!” What’s next, white players in black face? A minstrel show? Who was in charge of this nonsense?

Why would you fire someone for being racist? I thought it was protected by academic freedom of speech.

You’re right. I apologize to Coach Cristobal for suggesting that he should be fired for free speech.
UO’s customary punishment for unintentionally racist speech would be to humiliate him in the press, suspend him for the rest of the term, make him take special diversity training if he wants to keep his job, and then encourage students to shun him for the rest of his career. Not that I’m suggesting that is appropriate either.
Gosh, that sounds like a description of the newest Supreme Court justice and his bros. This ban can’t be consistent with our founders’ original intent.

Wow, impressive marketing range for Nike and the swoosh: take a “social justice” platform (Kap) nationally and rely on overtly racist stereotypes locally…

I would like to hear from the players.
My high school football buddies would have been thrilled with this.

One of my college teammates coaches high school basketball in Oakland, CA. I’ll forward this to him. It’ll be real interesting hearing what East Bay brothers think of this…

Oh, so that makes it right. Got it.

You’re right – if the players are okay with it, all’s good and who are we to have a care.?

I certainly wouldn’t want to send them to reeducation camp. I assume they have minds of their own. If they want to pose for something like this, I’m not going to tell them they shouldn’t.
It seems to me this ad is along the lines of others that the Ducks put out. Sort of witty mock slightly self-deprecating tough guy with a touch of strangeness.
My (white) high school football buddies would have been thrilled.
Don’t these guys have the same right, if they please? Then, I’m not going to complain.
Not everybody is or wants to be obsessed with race. I learned this long ago at an Irish bar in a mixed neighborhood in Boston.
I hope we hear from them.
Enough on this silly “issue.”

I wager a bet the players did not know at the time of the shooting that the title will be “Savages”. On the other hand…. would a mixed racial/ethnic picture would have made any difference?

Which is why I cross to the other side of the street when I see them coming my way? Even subtle stereotypes are stereotypes, and high school buddies hardly have any qualifying life-experience to comprehend the ramifications of subcutaneous stereotyping….
Also … your high school buddies were in high school when? …. 1950’s?

Where did this poster come from? Is it legit? I can’t find it anywhere via an internet search anyway.
Its a branding partnership between UO and “Art of Sport”, a line of personal body care products using athletes as spokespersons. Art of Sport coined the catchphrase “surround yourself with savages” and presumably hopes to profit off the UO marketing effort. UO also is a brand ambassador to Coors, Pepsi, and many other corporate partners.

Rob Mullens is gonna have a shit over this – unless of course the athletes get 0%.

Fits together nicely with the Rec Center’s new policy to prohibit men (who are sweaty, smelly, loud, grunting, and intimidating to women) from the weight room a couple hours each day.

Where were the “savages” last night. They didn’t show up for the game.
I bet they lose some of their potential recruits after their showings against Utah.
I predict they will fall out of the rankings as Utah moves up.
What an embarrassment for the school and the state.
