Mullens to pay back academics!

5/4/2011: Rachel Bachman of the Oregonian reports that on Wednesday the Pac-10 will announce a new TV deal that will boost UO’s take to $21 million. George Schroeder in the RG explains what it means for UO.

President Lariviere and AD Rob Mullens are planning a joint news conference, at which Lariviere will tell Mullens that he will now make the athletic department pay their bills:

$4 million for the Jock Box land (one time)
$2 million for the Jock Box operations
$1 million for academic scholarships, to pay back the state lottery funds
$600,000 for the athlete only parking
$500,000 for legal costs with UO General Counsel Geller and for DOJ attorney timekeepers
$500,000 for the NCAA Faculty Representative salary and expenses

And a $1 million contribution for academic scholarships, as the U of Kentucky president insisted athletics do at Mullens’s previous job.

Dream on fool. Mullens has already spent this money and more on salaries for himself and the coaches, with Lariviere’s blessing. Our president’s threat point is “will you please, please not make me pay the football museum curator out of the academic budget”?
