Election for Interim UO Provost

9/12/2011: Nominations are closed, voting is open and so are the comments.

9/9/2011: Provost Jim Bean announced yesterday he will step down for one year, for health related reasons. Greg Bolt story here. We wish our provost a speedy recovery. We will need an interim provost until he returns.

I’m no history professor, but Abraham Lincoln famously said that his election, by his peers, as militia captain in the Black Hawk War was “a success which gave me more pleasure than any I have had since.”

In that spirit, UO Matters would like to announce an election for the position of interim UO Provost. Candidates so far:

  • Scott Coltrane, CAS Dean
  • Kim Espy, new VP for Research
  • Robin Holmes, Student Affairs
  • Charles Martinez, OIED and OSLC
  • Holly GoSlugly, Eugene Slug Queen
  • Russ Tomlin, Academic Affairs
  • Francis Dyke, Finance and Admin
  • Michael Moffit, Law Dean
  • Mike Bullis, Ed School Dean
  • David Frank, Honors College Dean
  • Lorraine Davis, Athletic department
  • Frances Bronet, AAA Dean
  • Tim Gleason, Journalism

My money’s on Coltrane. No way Shelton wants anything to do with this. Dark horse candidate: de Kluyver. If she didn’t have such a mess to deal with, Espy would be the best candidate.

I’ll bet my spring 2012 raise on Shelton – only because Singell is gone.

Although not the most popular choice, Tomlin is the front runner. He has more administrative experience than anyone else on this list with the exception of Davis.

John Moseley. His current appointment as Bean’s assistant ends in December, he’s got more experience than Tomlin, and Lord knows the man loves money.

consider allowing LaRiviere to combine both offices for the interim. He. was recently provost, and working internally might broaden his perspective about how much yet needs to be done.

the idea of allowing those who have failed (Dyke, Tomlin, et al.) the opportunity to display their poor judgment further is appalling.

Dyke, never under estimate her powers. (play scary music here).

  7. Anonymous 09/09/2011

I don’t think Tomlin is the front runner. It would be much easier administratively to get an interim dean than to move someone up into Tomlin’s job.

I hear a lot of complaints about de Kluyver from the b-school folks. Maybe they will push him for the job to get him out of their hair.

AD Ron Mullens – except it would cut his salary in half.

  10. Anonymous 09/09/2011

    Tim Gleason, Journalism Dean

  11. Anonymous 09/09/2011

    Frances Bronet, AAA Dean.

Chip Kelly… I heard he will be looking for a new job soon.

  13. Anonymous 09/09/2011

Wendy Larson, currently UO VP for Portland

It will hafta be someone inferior to Jim Bean since he wants to jump back in the saddle a year from now. If the interim Provost outshines Jim Bean, then there would be a serious problem letting Bean back in the saddle. Thus it comes down to Dyke or Martinez.

No way Lorraine Davis gets this job – too much baggage from her days with Frohnmayer.

    Dog says

well since the current provost really only does
about 30% of this job in any way that might be
construed as useful, let’s just retain him at
60% so the University is twice as good.

And this is a serious question to all readers of UOmatter:

What kind of UO Provost motivated action would actually move the UO forward and garner the approval of the faculty as doing the right thing?

Seems to be me its irrelevant who the provost or
president is in terms of the evolution of the UO (or in maintaining its multi-decade state of stagnation) – collectively (including me) – we just don’t care enough to catalyze any transformation – maybe the Big Ideas was as good as it gets – what a crock.

I thought Frog and Moseley were the same person. If not, put me down for Frog.

  18. Dave F and J Mosley 09/11/2011

I nominate the editor / moderator of UO Matters. S/he needs to experience first hand how difficult it is to run this place. A bit of empathy might be a good thing!

  19. Anonymous 09/12/2011

Some minimal sense of ethics is actually more important than empathy.

  20. Duck Soup 09/13/2011

I second the nomination of John Moseley.

I would also like to nominate George Pernsteiner. He would unite the faculty, the administrators, and the classified staff. But good!

  21. UO Matters 09/13/2011

    Good one.

And we’re paying for his house anyway.

The tragedy here is that so many bad personnel decisions were made at the highest levels beginning with the appointment of Linda Brady and then her destructively poor judgment on administrative appointments.

The reality / consequence is that there are precious few in the central administration who can step to provide LaRiviere with the advice and support he needs.
