12/28/2011: Word around the Oregon Hall water cooler is that at least one key administrator will be leaving UO soon for a substantial promotion at another AAU school, and that others are looking more locally. Hardly surprising, given the administrative disarray and the weird internal politics of this place. Berdahl starts work tomorrow, but apparently he doesn’t get to town til January. The keys to Johnson Hall will be under the rock by the back door. Watch out for snakes. CFO search link here.

Does Laura Hubbard count as “key”?
I was going to guess Laura, too.
Of course Hubbard is leaving. Moffitt gets appointed to the search committee, sabotages the external candidates, then gets Lariviere to declare the search failed and to appoint her without any discussion or consideration of other internal candidates. And doubles her pay. And all this without a day of experience in the office. Impressive.
Is it true that Linda King is retiring?
Is this the result of the great administrative prowess of our recently departed lion?
Bean led the CFO search committee.
It’s ultimately the responsibility of the president for who gets the next-level administrative positions.
Why would the over $200K/year administrators want to leave when they get pampered with all expenses paid family vacations, free cars, reserved parking spaces, free cell phones, free conference trips (aka vacations) and other perks? Or is the word out around the Johnson Hall water cooler that “The Plumber” will start taking those perks away once he takes over? Seems unlikely given that the top admin types always take care of their own… And besides, these perks are written into their contracts… Also, has UOM checked to see if these perks are used to boost the salary computations for PERS retirement benefits like was done for Mike “Pay Day” Bellotti? Seems like just too cushy a deal to want to go elsewhere…
Does anyone know who Bean or Lariviere talked with before declaring the search failed and then appointing Moffitt? This must mean she hadn’t applied? When you declare a search failed can you then just appoint whoever you want? Does that work for faculty hires or just for the administration?
Jamie did not go through the same interview process as the regular candidates for this job. Lariviere’s letter says:
Frances Dyke announced in February that she will retire June 30, 2012. As a result, we launched a search for a chief financial officer. That search did not result in a hire. Considering the broad and crucial portfolio of the VPFA, and the failed CFO search, I determined that we cannot afford a pause in leadership in finance and administration. I asked Jamie to serve, and I’m glad she accepted. She will begin in her role as VPFA on Jan. 1, allowing a smooth transition to Frances’ retirement.
Sort of amazing she didn’t insist on some sort of transparency, to ensure at least a little buy in from co-workers and faculty. She did insist on a nice pay package though.
