June 14, 2012
To: UO students, faculty and staff
University of Oregon students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the State Board of Higher Education’s formal vote to approve Michael Gottfredson as the next president of the University of Oregon and celebrate the end of the academic year with a reception following the vote at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 15. The vote will begin at approximately 9 a.m. tomorrow (Friday, June 15) in the Ford Lecture Hall at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. There will be a reception (same location) immediately following the vote at approximately 9:30 a.m.
Michael R. Gottfredson, who has a doctorate in criminology, serves currently as executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of California, Irvine, and is a professor of criminology, law and society. More information about Dr. Gottfredson is available at http://president.uoregon.edu/search.
If confirmed as president, he will begin on Aug. 1, 2012, allowing for transition with Interim President Berdahl before the next academic year begins.
Here’s my best shot: Compare google searches for “insider trading Berdahl” with “insider trading Gottfredson“. The first gets you a list of Berdahl’s (perfectly legal) insider trades from the SEC Edgar data. The second gets you a list of citations to academic research on how Gottfredson’s model of criminal behavior applies to insider trading.
Update: The vote went off w/o a hitch. It’s almost as if Pernsteiner had planned UO’s presidential transition with Matt Donegan and the board before the meeting.
The reception will be a lot more interesting if he doesn’t get the votes.
Are you suggesting that Pernsteiner, Jill Eiland, and the rest of the OUS board have not already broken Oregon’s public meetings law by agreeing to this change in UO leadership in advance? That would be unprecedented.
What? Deals are made behind closed doors? Not in Oregon. Never.
If this goes off without a hitch, Gottfredson will have gone through a much more rigorous, public, and transparent search for this position than you ever went through to be employed at UO. No?
The last commentator is obviously ignorant of how faculty searches are conducted.
In my dept a candidates search day starts with 30 minute one-on-one meetings with everyone in the department, and ends with a 90 minute public research talk where the other professors try to prove to everyone that they know more about your dissertation topic than you do. Oh yeah, then we take you out to dinner to continue the argument. We do this for 3 top candidates, screened from 20 or so we’ve interviewed at national meetings, picked from several hundred whose research papers we screened.
I wonder if Russ Tomlin intended to put a thought police on the presidential search committee as he did for faculty searches to intercept any “unconscious biases”. Another one of his brilliant ideas which fortunately has not been implemented. Yet.

After reviewing the tape we conclude Berdahl got in the first licks, on Allyn Ford and Gottfredson.
Uo matters- did you go through your departments normal search process? There are rumors around campus that you were a trailing spouse and thus did not participate in any real search. True or not true?
I went through the normal search process. So did my wife. We met and married several years after I came here.
I can vouch for that –UOMatters did indeed go through the process described by UOMatters. I participated in the dinner. It was indeed a rigorous search.
In fact, this was one of the iciest winter evenings on record in Eugene. There was a tremendous ice storm. We barely made it home after the dinner.
Some kind of cosmic message?

Your department had a search for an Anonymous Blogger?
