Senate on May 28 to cover freedom, sexual violence, student conduct, athletics,

Last updated on 05/27/2014

5/27/2014 Academic Freedom update: Gottfredson is scheduled to address the Senate on Academic Freedom. He doesn’t want to enshrine the freedom of non-faculty UO employees and students to criticize UO policies – an objection he raised at the last minute, after many months of negotiation with the Senate committee. But the Senate passed the policy giving freedom to all at the April 9th meeting, after Gottfredson’s usual “I’ll take this under advisement” evasions, and his refusal to explain what he wanted, or why, and his refusal to bring his lawyers to the Senate to explain for him:

Now Gottfredson has to sign it or explain himself, in front of full assembly of the statutory faculty this fall, if the Trustees haven’t fired him by then.

5/25/2014: Senate Agenda for May 28: Sorry State of the Duck Athletics Department and what to do about it.

The rules for Rob Mullens’s report on the Duck athletics department are here. He was supposed to present in Winter, but Margie Paris let it slide. Time’s up. His report must include:

a) issues related to student athlete welfare;
b) priorities for the athletics department (and the relation of these priorities to the university mission);
c) the financial status of the athletics department;
d) planned expansion, remodeling or removal of athletics facilities;
e) changes in the status of sports teams;
f) changes in facilities management that might affect the university community;
g) any major violations by the athletics department, and their resolutions;
h) possible roles for faculty governing bodies to assure that academic policies and practices are consistent with supporting the intellectual growth and academic success of student athletes and the viability of athletics as an integral part of campus life;
i) any others topics the athletics director deems relevant to the university community.

And he must answer questions. Presumably in writing, since there’s a time crunch, given the controversial and urgent Student Conduct Code revisions, linked to below and with ore explanatory material here.
