6/3/2014: Bruce Blonigen (Economics) appointed Associate Dean for Social Sciences:

MEMORANDUM

TO: College of Arts and Sciences Faculty & Staff

FROM: W. Andrew Marcus, Interim Dean

SUBJECT: Associate Dean of the Social Sciences

Based on the advice of a committee of distinguished senior faculty and others, I am pleased to announce that Bruce Blonigen of the Department of Economics will begin a three-year term as Associate Dean of the Social Sciences as of July 1, 2014.

Bruce has been a member of the UO faculty in the Economics Department since 1995 and a Philip H. Knight Professor of Social Science since 2001. He served as head of the department from 2008 through 2013, before stepping in to be the Acting Associate Dean for the Social Sciences since July of last year. In his capacity as head, he effectively guided the Economics Department through a period of dramatic growth, with majors almost doubling to over 800, large increases in international enrollments, and associated growth in both the graduate program and faculty lines. It is notable that in this time of growth the scholarly stature of the department grew as well. In his role as Acting Associate Dean, Bruce has played a key role in the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, development efforts on behalf of the college, and work on behalf of diversity. Particularly notable on the diversity front is his role as co-founder of the Summer Academy to Inspire Learning (SAIL). This program brings 8th through 12th grade low-income students to week-long camps on the UO campus that encourage and prepare them to attend college. Last year, 14 SAIL students entered universities (9 at UO) and 15 entered community colleges. Bruce also has an extensive record of university service, ranging from his recent work as chair of the UO RIGE Review Committee to service on the UO Faculty Personnel Committee and the Senate Executive Committee. In all his efforts, Bruce displays a commitment to fairness and principled decision-making, and to making university processes, information, and choices more transparent.

I look forward with excitement to working with Bruce over the coming years. Please join me in welcoming him to this new role.
