Pres Schill, Prov Phillips, VPFA Moffitt to speak to fac & staff Th 4PM

I wonder how much Johnson Hall paid the consultant who told them it would be a good idea to have a $150K PR flack moderate this. It seems Moffitt refused to participate, or was disinvited. Her substitutes were not up to the job. The Emerald has some damning quotes here. No word yet on which sports Schill will cut.

4/2/2010: I notice they are not bringing out the people who actually make the decisions: BoT Secretary Angela Wilhelms and VPBRP Brad Shelton. Yesterday’s version for the parents and students was heavily scripted and managed by PR flack Jennifer Williams, who ignored some students pointed online questions about tuition refunds. I’m hoping this session will be a little less DPRK.

As spring term gets underway, we want you to know how much we appreciate everything you are doing to support our students and the campus community during this unprecedented time of disruption. We have heard so many positive and inspiring stories about the important work you are doing as we continue to deliver on our teaching and research mission. We are proud, heartened, and deeply grateful.

Modifying University of Oregon operations in response to COVID-19 is not without challenges, but we are confident that, together, our resiliency and fortitude will see us through. Many of you may have questions about the university’s response and the move to remote education and operations for the spring term. The rapid and dramatic changes may create uncertainty and stress for some. We want to make a concerted effort to be responsive to faculty and staff as key contributors to the university’s success. Given the pace of change, we don’t have all the answers, but we want to take your questions and share as much as we can.

On Thursday, April 2, at 4:00 p.m., the university will hold a virtual town hall for all faculty and staff. You can watch the livestream on this webpage. Submit questions ahead of time using this web form or ask questions during the town hall by emailing [email protected]. It will be recorded and posted on the town hall website for those who cannot join the live event.

The town hall panel will include university leaders who will address key components of our operational response, such as employee relations and benefits, academic support services, and technology and information services, to name a few.

As always, you can find the latest information about the UO’s response to COVID-19 at uoregon.edu/coronavirus and on the FAQ page. Information for faculty on remote teaching is available on the provost’s website and human resources information for faculty and staff is available on the HR website.

    If the CEO of Columbia Sportswear can cut his salary to $10,000 to help out during the pandemic, I’m sure Pres. Schill could do the same.

      I’m sure he’d explain that he is somehow statutorily required to accept the full paycheck until the trustees renegotiate a contract…just like all the coaches. Honest, I’d love to, Imean, I really love to…but my hands are tied…

      Good idea! In fact, we should agree that anyone making above 80k a year take a salary cut. Percentage cut increases with salary. Our faculty union can coordinate this action. Let’s all work together to save jobs at the UO!

        In the 1980s The faculty once voted to voluntarily forgo two years of pay increases in order to help get through a crisis, but that was a different faculty and a different administration.

          During the last “budget crisis”, the admin did not give up any $, OA’s didn’t give up any $, faculty didn’t give up any $ — ONLY classified staff gave up $ directly in the form of FURLOUGHS, ie loss wages (and loss benefits/PERS$). The Pres of the UO at the time got into trouble for letting classified make up the difference. Nonetheless, it’s always, always, always the least paid, those with the least resources, who are the *first* and stuck with giving up the most economic (and fringe benefit) losses.

    Schill: Temporary pay cuts for self, VPs. Will ask all employees to make sacrifices. “Most” unions are talking with admin about shared sacrifices. To schew some cynicism, nothing about Jumbotron, Phildo, coaches.

    Moderated Q to Schill: How are we preparing financially?

    Hiring freeze. We’re discussing cutting baseball, maybe even golf. Planning to trim 2 ft off top and sides of Jumbotron. Time to unwind Law, that’ll save $10M a year. Might even make Ducks pay the $2.4M for the Jock Box.

    Q for Schill: Why are we still building Hayward and Knight Campus? Schill: I’d likely get sued if I broke contract with Uncle Phil. Besides, it’s a different bucket. (So why is the academic bucket paying ~2.17M to wire up the Phildo?)

    Schill: Want to work with all the employee groups to get the necessarily flexibility so that we can save jobs for our faculty and staff without having to reduce our athletic subsidies.

    Schill telling us we’d better be professional and courteous, cynicism won’t be tolerated, otherwise more draconian methods will be imposed is threatening and insulting… taking lead from another prez? This sows cynicism and mistrust.

    The part where he advised “This is not the time for that behavior” was laughable. It looks like the arms race in sports spending blitz has finally hit a wall for now. Can UO or the Foundation sell extra land it acquired like Tree Tops or the Joe Romania building or current UO police station or the house the president lives in ? Some of those places are far enough from the campus that UO could end up being more efficient without them. Could the Portland UO be eliminated ?

    And, “In the past, there have been some folks who have tried to divide us and sew doubt in the sincerity of our leaders and our mission. I want to emphasize, in the strongest possible terms…” Schill said. “It is fine to disagree with some of the decisions we will make. I, for one, am fully capable of making pretty big mistakes, but please do not doubt my motive. It is to ensure our community’s ability to thrive now and in the future.”

    Laughable? Sounds like Harbaugh just got called out. Aw, SNAP!
