I’m not on this task force. I’d take umbrage, except for the fact that I’m not on this task force means that’s it’s just shared-governance theatre.
What happened to the proposed legislation on the School of Languages and Global Studies?
Notice of motion (for the June meeting) was given. We had extensive discussion of the proposed new school at Senate office hours and will likely continue the conversation each week (Wednesdays 10-11:30, Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/480455396).
This week, we heard a number of concerns related to the transparency, accessibility, and speed of the process, the level of faculty involvement, the level of Steering committee involvement, the potential for loss of disciplinary rootedness, and the lack of data to support the assumption that the change will solve the perceived problem.
The Senate President and I are discussing these concerns with CAS leadership and the provost with the hope of addressing them well in advance of the June senate meeting. Our goal is to find a way to substantially increase faculty involvement in how the process unfolds and the final proposed changes.
