As an economist, you’ll appreciate that the contingent faculty are happy to get these jobs— which means they are not underpaid. If the wages were higher, fewer of them would be hired, and those who weren’t hired would be worse off.
On the other hand, this does expose hypocrisy in those who reject the market forces argument and think business school professors are overpaid compared to English department professors. That gap is small relative to the gap between English profs and English contingent teachers.
