No. Lorraine needs to stay. With the right boss she will go through the place with a chainsaw.

Whom. (You use “whom” whenever you would use “him”–“Berdahl should fire him” is correct, while “Berdahl should fire he” is not.)

But isn’t it better to write “Berdahl should fire whom?” than “Whom should Berdahl fire?” Frankly, we should send UO Matters on sabbatical to learn the basics of grammar and how to be a better writer. Is there a Latin boot camp in Oregon?

Is it even possible for an interim Prez to fire anyone at the top level? Wouldn’t ‘rocking the boat’ internally at this time reduce our ability to deal with external relations with greater success, such as making sure the board and governor will take our input seriously re. search and independent board?

    Berdahl’s job is to

    1) cut a deal with Kitzhaber on a plan for UO independence,
    2) clear the decks,
    3) find us a new President.

If he leaves without accomplishing at least two of these, he’s failed. Johnson Hall is filled with the wreckage of 15 years of Frohnmayer and stupid hires by Bean like Simon. Lariviere was appointing children – Geller, Moffitt, Galvan – to key jobs because he couldn’t get anyone good. Berdahl has the Rolodex, and he needs to recruit key people quickly.

Direct the new VPFA to conduct a professional reassessment of the managerial skills for each AVP and Director working within Finance and Administration to determine whether they would be a credible candidate for the position they currently hold. Of the group that were reporting to FD several were promoted without competition, and others were given a leadership role when preferred candidate(s) withdrew. When the deadwood is found, and it would be, that administrator should be put on a work plan or given notice.
