11/5/2013: Whoops sorry. It’s a pair of Duck *players* that were selling basketball shoes. Totally unacceptable for players to earn any money from big-time college sports. That’s for the boosters like Knight, and the coaches like Dana Altman – whose $1.8M contract gives him plenty of shoe money:
Didn’t Prefontaine get in trouble for the same thing? Or was that just in the movie?
Its even easier to sell stone else’s name and image after their dead
Well, what’s interesting about this is that there were 5 players involved, not just the 2 that are currently on the team; and this during the time that the NCAA was investigating UO for football violations. They all knew that and know the rules, regardless of what anyone thinks about pay for play, or not.
So … what exactly is the athletic culture at UO? It’s definitely one of secrecy and entitlement. Now it includes flaunting the rules while under investigation. One ex-football player was arrested for cocaine last week. What else is going on?
Ask the IAC?
Rob Illig is the current IAC chair. Contact him directly at [email protected]. Send Qs to the whole committee if really want something done… http://committees.uoregon.edu/iac
Why don’t college athletes unionize, like the GTFF or their professional sports counterparts?
Partly because they individually have no incentive to start such a movement. The coaches and administrators have playing time as the carrot and no player capable of organizing such a movement would jeopardize playing time. Retired players could do it. Donors could contribute to a new climate. Administrators could do it. Coaches could do it. Plenty of fat, soft, rich, mostly white men… they could do it.
Mostly white, but not mostly fat?
I thought there were millions of dollars at stake, and athletes still can’t throw birthday parties or sell t-shirts. Do they really have no incentive?
Best lipo you can buy
Is nobody disturbed by a basketball against Georgetown in South Korea in the middle of the term?
Academically, it’s probably good that two players got suspended…
Ha!
Better question: what’s a “hoya”?
Today, 11-19-13, we learned the price of the shoes via The Register Guard. Just a little late?
A pair sold by players went for $1800 each, and then re-sold for $6500. We’re not talking walking money.

$1800 to an athlete. That is outrageous. Wait – how much do the coaches get from UO’s contract with Nike? A million or so? Hmm.
Sigh. Take a step back from the monitor. ;)
You argue for faculty, student and athlete fairness coupled with administration balance demanding equitable treatment … and then defend athlete dishonesty? Pick a side!
The scandal is not $1,800 for a student-athlete. The scandal is $6,500 in lost revenue for the AD auctioning off sweaty shoes and gear from student athletes… I am pretty sure the AD will find its way to bill the academic side for this outrageous student behavior.
[…] $1.35 million of Oregon basketball coach Dana Altman’s $1.8 million annual salary comes not from the school, but from Nike, in exchange for complying with apparel and shoe deals. According to a recent report by Kate Howard […]
