Administrative bloat continues

Scott Jaschik has the data, at InsideHigherEd. UO’s administrative salaries look pretty generous in comparison to other public PhD granting schools – and that’s not counting the golden parachute deals UO hands out like popcorn. At many public universities these are illegal. Bob Berdahl got in quite a bit of trouble for his at UC-Berkeley, and at NC State and Maryland, administrators had to pay them back, after the legislatures found out about them from ever helpful higher-ed reporters.

And this just in from a helpful reader (in the comments):

Yes, this is the average, but these averages make the UO look pretty good, especially in light of Uncle Bernie always saying we have some awesome retirement and healthcare plans as well added to the top of these base salaries, but perhaps everyone does.

Here are a few comparisons.
The Athletic director average is $238K where the UO seems to pay about $470K
The average for chief enrollment management is $170 and UO pays $240
The average for chief research officer is $247K and the UO pays $305K
The average for chief finance is $231K and the UO pays $281K
The average for president is $425K and we have $455K.
The average for provost is $302K and our new Provost will be at about $360K.
The head football coach is $1.8M for UO.

It would be more interesting to include data on the faculty ranks
(asst, assoc, full and adjunct profs) to compare with the listed admin
categories. Isn’t it the case that there is significant divergence
between the admin types and the faculty types here at UO? Of
course, our admins will say that their higher salary increases, relative
to faculty, are necessary to keep administrators from jumping ship to
other universities. And to be competitive when recruiting.

That’s right. Our salaries are really really really *competitive*. That’s why our admin salaries are well above our comparators while our highest achieving faculty mope around with salaries 20-30 percent below! Salaries were frozen for faculty (and we justified that by pointing to the ongoing CBA negotiations) but of course administrators all got healthy consistent raises the entire time! Then while we wax on about how crucial it is to have the best people in Johnson Hall…even our very very worst people get raises and sinecures that would make Gottfredson blush, if he weren’t so intently and carefully focused “outward”.

Isn’t it delicious? Candy. From. A. Baby.

…and it seems that for every 1 admin that goes, 2 take his or her place. If I hear one more time from the Finance office or the P’s or D’s offices that “we don’t have the money we need” for raises, I might throw up. Can’t someone list the top paid 20 – 30 admins and figure out where we can cut their salaries to give faculty another 2% raise? We would still be way behind the AAU average, so the UO’s “integrity” could remain in place.

My comments have been mostly about pensions, with very little about how great the medical benefits are — I’ve always counted the latter as being about average, lacking more precise information, and believing “average” to be about right.

The administrator pension benefits of course depend on date of hire. If they are Tier 3, which I would think is the case with almost all senior administrators, then by my estimate they are higher than average by a few percent.

As for the salary comparisons — the table compared to is the median for all public Ph.D. universities. I think UO is a cut above the median.

A better comparison might be to public AAU universities, or just our 8 AAU comparators.

Of course, then you get into questions like how does UO rank academically compared to them.

I would be willing to guess that UO upper administrators are somewhat on the high side on total compensation, especially by comparison with UO faculty.

I’ll let somebody else provide the numbers, if they wish.

On the other hand, one can ask, if the pay/compensation at UO is on the high side, is UO getting its money’s worth?

After the way various people (presidents, provosts, etc) have fared here, I suspect that UO might be kind of a tough sell by now.
