Altman’s career in ruins, along with Gottfredson, Geller. Lorraine Davis off the hook so far.

Last updated on 05/16/2014

NBC sports story on Altman here. I’m thinking Dane Altman is blaming Mike Gottfredson, for botching the rape allegation cover-up. And Gottfredson is probably blaming Altman for the fact that *his* career is in ruins. Meanwhile, Lorraine Davis was probably the one who should have vetted Brandon Austin, but for some reason the reporters aren’t asking her questions, yet. Her totally redacted job description is here – courtesy of Dave Hubin’s office. Her contact info is here:

Department: Senior Vice President And Provost
Title: Special Assistant to AD
Department: Intercollegiate Athletics

Then of course there’s Randy Geller. Does anyone still believe Gottfredson? On May 5th, just hours before the rape allegation story broke, “Around the O” announced Geller’s “resignation”:

In a personal message to several close colleagues, Geller noted that he informed President Michael Gottfredson of his intentions on April 21.

“Randy Geller has provided great service and tremendous counsel to this university through both challenging and exciting times,” said Gottfredson. “His legacy of helping shepherd this organization into a historic new governance model will be felt for many years to come.”

Geller added that he

“ suspect(s) there will be some on campus, given the nature of my work here, that may try to frame this as something other than the simple truth: it is time for me to move on to the next chapter of my professional career.”

Why would you suspect that Randy? Hmm, what happened the week of April 21st? It really took you that long to figure out the cover-up wouldn’t work?

They can all have each other.

You continue to be blatantly and shamefully dishonest in calling the administration’s actions a “cover up.” The administration never covered up the allegations. The allegations were thoroughly investigated by the Eugene police, and they were also investigated by the UO. If you want to argue that the UO should have gotten involved earlier–i.e., on or around April 8, when the police investigation ended, that’s fine. But your use of “cover up” implies–I assume, intentionally–that the UO tried to conceal from law enforcement and the public alike (that’s what “cover up” means in the context of an alleged crime) is just sickening.

When you get responses like “SomeGuy”, you know you’re hitting bullseye.

What’s sickening is watching a President of a major University stand in front of its faculty in the middle of a disaster of his own making and proclaim that they did everything perfectly, while calling the criticisms “inappropriate”. He also either lied about their actions meeting guidelines under The Clery Act, or he doesn’t understand it.

What’s sickening is watching that same President trot out a story about who knew what and when that just isn’t plausible. I’ve not seen one major news report that buys it.

So hang on to your semantic argument over whether a cover up happened or not. What is clear is that Gott is a major failure as a leader and he fucked this one up badly.

Wow, if Oregon has another wrecked presidency, it will be near impossible to get someone decent or reputedly decent to come here in that position. And then there are other top people who either have had their careers wrecked here, or had to move on in time to escape their pursuers. Think of “the pursuers”as the wolf pack, or the lynch mob, or the sheriff’s posse, take your pick. And then there are the reportedly dreadful relations between certain actors at UO and its historic prime donor. “Certain actors” can mean a lot of different people or groups of people, take your pick. And now it looks like certain actors want to get the federal government involved in the recent scandal, if it is not already. A really nasty, dysfunctional pot of stew brewing.

I hope it will calm down, somehow.

Yeah, the whole point of this blog is that UO needs better administrators, but then the blog drives off anyone good from coming here. Thanks Bill.

Sorry, you’re right – we should trick administrators into coming here, like Bean did with Espy.

I apologize, and I’ll start covering things up too.

I’d be a lot sorrier, Uncle Bernie, if they’d hired us a half-way decent president; or a halfway decent president who recognized when he made missteps and worked to improve and get to 3/4-decent. But as with Espy, there is really no use keeping a bad apple around longer than necessary, especially when the barrel has so many (though not all) rotten ones already.

I agree that it can get pretty sordid, can seem like a lynch mob, and some of it plays out in truly dysfunctional ways, but it seems to be the only leverage we have these days–as has been true all too long.

All I can say I wish you all the best!

A reboot is needed but that is after the hard drive is wiped and the Johnson Hall plantation house fumigated.

I am always amazed the strange level of blame that gets pointed at this blog author. National news reporters are calling this a cover up from Coast to coast. Gag orders, carefully prefabricated press conferences, that omit students & faculty, mystery timelines & now a wall of silence. Altman could have just came to his press conference & Simply said”I’m disappointed, sooo disappointed,so very very disappointed. For the record I am disappointed.” (Oh wait– he did!). The students are none too happy & there is a general sense of discontent at the U of O. They are so locked down @ the administrative level, they can’t even say “No Comment”. You would think Gott would at least send an underling to talk to the angry students. One thing for sure- ignoring them has only made things worse.

  4. anonyous 05/15/2014

All this angry finger pointing! Next thing you know they will be blaming low revenues @ Matt Arena, cost overruns @ the new student union, potholes on campus, & tuition hikes on YOU.

  5. Wait.... 05/15/2014

…did I read this right? Honest Uncle Bernie, are you saying that when the UO breaks a federal law, no one should say anything? The “certain actor” is a specialist in these situations.

I feel like people think this is about the UO or Gott or Altman or the players. It’s not. It’s about the woman who was assaulted…not allegedly…she was assaulted. I’ve seen it more times than I can count in my lifetime. And, it’s about all the women at UO and in the rest of the community knowing what’s going on and where.

    • honest Uncle Bernie 05/18/2014

Of course, I said no such thing.

She was assaulted? not allegedly, she was assaulted, you have certain knowledge of that?

By all means, please bring this to the attention of the police.

By “certain actors” I meant a number of people who reportedly are trying to involve the federal government on behalf of both the alleged victim and the alleged perpetrators.

Whether they succeed or not, whether they are completely justified or completely off their rockers, I’ll stick with my statement:

“A really nasty, dysfunctional pot of stew brewing.”

  6. Hippo 05/16/2014

Altman offered the words “disappointed” for how he felt about three of his players being accused of rape. For me, “disappointed” is how I feel when I lose a basketball *game*; outraged, disgusted, and betrayed are but some of my feelings when someone I invite into my community commits a violent act against another person.

  7. Gott Kitzhaber? 05/16/2014

Gotts not got to go unless Kitz boots him. This is an election year. Where does candidate Kitz stand on institutionalized rape?

    • Governor Kitzhaber 05/16/2014

I would lose the duck vote if I fire Gott.

[Editor: The hypothesis that this comment actually came from our Governor should be rejected at the 95% confidence level.]

      • Anonymous 05/16/2014

Kitzhaber will only defer to the new board which seems more than reasonable.
