5/19/2014 update: Exactly how much will UO pay Gottfredson to leave?

He can be dismissed for cause, or without cause with 30 days notice. For cause is a lot cheaper, but if he fights it the legal bills, and mutual embarrassment, increase substantially. I’m no economist, but it’s basically a game of chicken, with the rules as defined in his contract below.

5/18/2014: How much will UO pay Gottfredson to leave?

A lot. The Chronicle of Higher Ed has the raw data on the cost of persuading an incompetent president to leave. N is surprisingly large. Combine his buyout, the other JH insiders that will be leaving, and the lawyers, consultants, and legal settlements, and this could easily cost UO as much as we had to pay to get rid of our previous General Counsel Melinda Grier and Mike Bellotti. Much of it will probably be laundered through the UO Foundation, in an effort to frustrate public disclosure. Phil Knight’s PAC still has $327K in the bank, but that’s unlikely to even cover Sharon Rudnick’s billable hours. Still no word from UO communicator Tobin Klinger on what we’re paying HLGR and Frohnmayer.

Seems to me I remember you looking fondly at the appointment that became Gottfredson. Before that, quickly hating Berdahl (understandably) and wistfully viewing Lariviere in very rose colored glasses (observation).

The trustees are a new group and who the hell knows how they will proceed from here? They could turn out to be your worst nightmare.

So far the UO Board of Trustees look likes the best thing to happen with UO governance in 20 years.

The UO Board of Trustees is the first governance change for UO in 85 years.
