7PM Today: Mary Koss — on Surveys, Services, and Sanctions: Sexual Assault on Campus

Mary Koss, PhD, was coeditor of a two-book series for the American Psychological Association, Violence Against Women and Children (2011). Her first national study on acquaintance rape was published in 1987, and she developed the most frequently used survey to measure unwanted sexual experiences. Her current projects include developing risk assessment and therapeutic approaches for those found responsible for campus sexual misconduct and a primary prevention program focusing on alcohol serving establishments. She is a member of the working group to develop a best practices manual for the assessment of campus climate and a second group to develop and advocate for innovation in collegiate response to sexual misconduct within OCR and VAWA guidelines.

I can’t believe this… ‘person’… is still being invited to speak. She should be shunned, as the lepers were in the Antiquity.

“It is inappropriate to consider as a rape victim a man who engages in unwanted sexual intercourse with a woman.”¹

“If you look at this group of men who identify themselves as rape victims raped by women … their shame is not similar to women, their level of injury is not similar to women and their penetration experience is not similar to what women are reporting. … What would I call [a man being drugged and waking up with a woman on top of him with his penis inserted inside her vagina]? I would call it ‘unwanted contact’.”²
